Vale Base Metals to Boost Copper Output at Salobo Mine with New Technology
Vale Base Metals will implement coarse particle flotation (CPF) at its Salobo mine. The new technology is expected to increase annual copper production by approximately 30,000 tonnes and ore processing capacity.
Vale Base Metals has announced the implementation of coarse particle flotation (CPF) technology at its Salobo mine in Brazil. This implementation is projected to add approximately 30,000 tonnes of annual copper production and six million tonnes of annual ore processing capacity.
The project at Salobo has received its construction license, with start-up accelerated to the first half of 2028. This advanced start-up enables the processing of a larger volume of ore earlier than previously anticipated in 2029.
The CPF technology allows for the recovery of coarser mineral particles, enhancing the efficiency of the recovery process while reducing the need for fine grinding. Vale Base Metals has also optimized the capital expenditure estimate for the CPF implementation.
Furthermore, the company has entered into an agreement with Wheaton Precious Metals concerning future production from Salobo. While financial terms were not disclosed, the agreement is expected to positively impact the Salobo mine's long-term profitability.
