Valio expands biogas truck use in logistics to meet renewable energy goals

Dairy company Valio is expanding its use of biogas-powered trucks across its logistics operations, including milk collection and product delivery. The company aims to transition its entire transport fleet to renewable energy sources by 2035. According to Valio, biogas vehicles can reduce transport-related greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90 percent compared to diesel.

Mika Jyrkönen, Valio's Head of Logistics, emphasized the importance of route optimization and operational efficiency in emission reduction efforts. "The most environmentally friendly mile is the one that is not driven, and it is also the most cost-effective," Jyrkönen stated. These initiatives are part of Valio's broader climate and sustainability strategy.

The expansion of biogas vehicles is contingent on the development of refueling infrastructure. Petteri Laine, Valio's Head of Logistics for Milk Collection and Transport, noted that the company evaluates low-emission fuel options whenever vehicles are renewed or transport agreements are updated. "We can add more biogas vehicles as the refueling station network matures," Laine said.

Transport companies collaborating with Valio have adapted to using biogas trucks, reporting practical reliability and minimal changes for drivers. Valio's long-term objective is to utilize various renewable energy sources, including biogas, electricity, and renewable diesel, depending on specific transport needs. In 2025, Valio Logistics' biogas vehicles covered 392,000 kilometers, resulting in a reduction of 262,000 kg of CO₂e emissions compared to diesel.
