Valve Co-founder Gabe Newell Collected and Made Weapons

Valve Corporation co-founder Gabe Newell, widely recognized as "G胖", is a billionaire known for his love of yachts and daily Dota 2 sessions. However, new insights from Minh, a co-creator of Counter-Strike, reveal another facet of Newell's life: that of a weapons master.

Minh, who was instrumental in the development of the Half-Life mod that evolved into the popular Counter-Strike series, shared anecdotes from his time at Valve during a recent interview. He described Newell's tendency to become intensely focused on his various interests.

"I remember one time he became obsessed with knives," Minh recalled. "He started collecting knives and axes, and dedicated a room to it, filling it with knives, various bladed weapons, and swords. It was quite intense." Newell's engagement didn't stop at collecting; he reportedly began crafting weapons himself, even taking classes to learn the art of blade making. "He would just dive headfirst into anything he found interesting," Minh stated, characterizing Newell as someone with immense curiosity and a continuous drive to learn.

In recent years, Newell has stepped back from the frontline of Valve and Steam's daily operations. While some have speculated this shift is linked to his interests in yachts and weaponry, a former Portal 2 developer recently suggested Newell's reduced role in game development might stem from an environment where his ideas are rarely challenged by his colleagues.
