Valve Open-Sources Steam Frame's Android Compatibility Layer Lepton
Valve has released the source code for Lepton, its compatibility layer enabling Steam Frame to run Android games, as open source. The move is expected to foster further development and customization.
Gaming technology company Valve has made Lepton, its compatibility layer for running Android games on the Steam Frame device, available as open source.
The project's source code is now hosted on Valve's GitLab repository. Lepton is designed to help developers bring VR Android games to Steam Frame, with potential for other uses, though Valve notes these are not the primary focus and may be less polished.
The Lepton project incorporates components from Waydroid, Anbox, Halium, and Hybris. Valve has combined its proprietary code with parts of the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), integrating system libraries including graphics drivers and the Vulkan layer, while removing redundancies from Android for improved efficiency.
By open-sourcing Lepton, Valve allows developers to directly use the code, adapt it for different applications, or even fork it to add features or optimize performance. This approach mirrors the development of community projects like CachyOS-Proton and Proton-GE, which have enhanced gaming on SteamOS.
Valve previously outlined requirements for its Steam Frame Verified program, and the open-sourcing of Lepton aligns with efforts to expand and improve the gaming ecosystem on the platform.
