Varda Space Industries Launches Two Vehicles to Orbit on Single Rocket
Varda Space Industries successfully launched two W-series spacecraft, W-8 and W-9, simultaneously on a SpaceX Transporter-18 rideshare mission. This marks the first time the company has launched multiple vehicles together, signaling a shift towards fleet operations.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – Varda Space Industries announced on October 1, 2026, that it launched two of its W-series spacecraft, W-8 and W-9, concurrently aboard a SpaceX Transporter-18 rideshare mission. This launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base represents the first time Varda has sent two vehicles into orbit on the same rocket.
The simultaneous launch signifies Varda's transition to fleet operations and an increased cadence of launches and reentries for its orbital pharmaceutical processing and hypersonic reentry services. The two vehicles will be managed in tandem from Varda's newly expanded Mission Operations facility in El Segundo.
Both W-8 and W-9 carry payloads from commercial and government partners. W-8 features advanced thermal protection systems and monitoring equipment from Canopy Aerospace & Defense, along with next-generation materials funded by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). W-9 includes a government-funded navigation system and advanced heatshield materials from Syensqo.
Varda aims to establish in-space manufacturing as a viable industry characterized by high launch frequency, low mission costs, and autonomous systems. The company has successfully reentered six capsules since 2024 and intends to further increase its launch and reentry rate in the future.
