Varma updates principles for investee engagement

Finnish pension insurance company Varma has revised its Principles for Investee Engagement, updating its approach to influencing companies in which it invests. The new principles, aligned with Varma’s renewed strategy from 2025 and its updated sustainability programme, aim to concentrate efforts on actions that yield the greatest impact.

The updated strategy prioritizes meaningful engagement over exclusion, focusing on developing responsible business practices and sustainable value creation within portfolio companies. Varma will primarily target Finnish companies and specific points within the investment value chain where its influence is deemed most effective. Engagement is acknowledged as the company’s most important tool for promoting sustainability.

Varma divides its engagement work into two complementary approaches: reactive and proactive. Reactive engagement addresses identified risks and violations of norms, ensuring investee companies remediate issues and prevent future occurrences. Proactive engagement focuses on promoting sustainable practices based on pre-defined themes aimed at enhancing portfolio resilience and long-term value.

Annually defined thematic focus areas, such as climate, biodiversity, or human rights, will provide a structured approach to the company's engagement. The principles also emphasize strengthened monitoring and transparency regarding engagement activities and their outcomes, with Varma committing to clearer reporting on these efforts.
