Varvaglione 1921, an Italian winery established in 1921, has revealed a significant expansion with the acquisition of the historic Casino Nitti estate in Marina di Lizzano. Alongside this acquisition, the company is introducing its first sparkling wine produced using the Metodo Classico method, named CÀ.
The new sparkling wine, CÀ, is dedicated to Carlotta Varvaglione, representing the fifth generation of the family in winemaking. This dual announcement signifies the company's commitment to its family legacy while embracing future generations and innovation.
The Casino Nitti estate, a historic hunting lodge dating back to approximately 1550, spans over 70 hectares along the Ionian coast. This acquisition allows Varvaglione 1921 to unify winemaking traditions and grape varieties from two prominent Southern Italian regions: Puglia and Campania.
Central to the Casino Nitti estate is the "Vineyard of Biodiversity," an experimental plot featuring over 500 minor and Balkan grape varieties. In collaboration with researchers from the University of Milan and the University of Salento, this project studies the adaptability of rare grape varietals to Mediterranean climate change and explores new rootstocks for sustainable viticulture.
