Vaseline Turns Viral Beauty Hacks into 43% Sales Surge

Vaseline has successfully transformed user-generated beauty "hacks" into a significant driver of sales growth by embracing popular trends on social media. The brand capitalized on user-created content to launch new products, resulting in a record-breaking campaign and a 43 percent increase in e-commerce sales.

Instead of dismissing or attempting to shut down unofficial product uses, Vaseline actively identified and investigated popular beauty tips circulating on platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels. These hacks, often involving petroleum jelly in unconventional ways, gained millions of views. Vaseline chose to validate and leverage these trends rather than ignore them.

The "Vaseline Verified" campaign involved laboratory testing of hundreds of popular user-shared beauty hacks. Only those deemed effective and functional received the brand's official stamp of approval. Subsequently, the company developed a new product line, Vaseline Originals, based on the most successful verified hacks. This line includes items like a brow tamer and primer/highlighter jellies, directly inspired by content creators' original demonstrations.

Beyond launching new products, Vaseline publicly credited the original creators as "Vaseline OG's." This strategy is described as a comprehensive system: monitor existing user behavior, scientifically test claims, validate successful ideas, develop them into commercial products, and give credit back to the community. The campaign generated over 63 million interactions and saw mentions of Vaseline hacks surge by 1,293 percent, achieving 87 percent positive sentiment.
