Vattenfall has made a final investment decision to build a large-scale battery storage facility at its Brunsbüttel site in Germany. The facility will have an output of 254 MW and a storage capacity of approximately 1,000 MWh, positioning it as one of Germany's largest battery projects and Vattenfall's largest to date.
The project will be located on the site of the former Brunsbüttel nuclear power plant, which is currently undergoing decommissioning. The battery storage system and its connection to the 50 Hertz transmission grid are scheduled to become operational by the end of 2028.
The investment aims to enhance grid stability and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources. Battery storage solutions are increasingly crucial for the energy transition, enabling better balancing of electricity supply and demand.
