Vattenfall receives approval for battery storage in Brunsbüttel

Brunsbüttel's municipal council (District of Dithmarschen) has approved Vattenfall's plans to construct a significant battery storage facility and its associated transformer substation. The plant is slated for construction on the site of the decommissioned nuclear power plant, marking a transition from nuclear energy production to the storage of renewable energy.

Vattenfall intends to build a battery system with a nominal capacity of 254 megawatts and a storage volume of 700 megawatt-hours. The company states that this project represents another step towards achieving a fossil-free energy supply. Both the battery installation and the new transformer substation, which will connect the facility to the national power grid, are expected to be operational by 2028 at the latest.

The approval, granted in November 2025, is a significant milestone for Vattenfall's efforts to expand its renewable energy storage capabilities. The Brunsbüttel project is part of a broader strategy to transition the energy sector and contribute to Germany's climate objectives.

Locating the facility at the former nuclear power plant site leverages existing infrastructure and industrial capacity. This development is anticipated to enhance energy grid stability and facilitate the integration of intermittent renewable sources like wind and solar power.
