Vattenfall Starts North Sea Wind Project Construction

Swedish energy company Vattenfall has begun offshore construction of the Nordlicht wind cluster in the German North Sea. The first monopile installation for the Nordlicht I wind farm took place on July 1, 2026.

The cluster is located approximately 85 kilometers north of the island of Borkum and comprises two separate wind farms: Nordlicht I with a planned capacity of around 980 MW and Nordlicht II with approximately 630 MW. Together, the projects are expected to generate around 6 TWh of electricity annually once fully operational, with commissioning scheduled for 2028.

DEME is responsible for the transport and installation of the foundations and transition pieces for both wind farms. The monopiles are manufactured by EEW Special Pipe Constructions in Rostock, while the transition pieces are supplied by CSWind in Aalborg. Nordlicht I will consist of 68 foundations.

The project aims to meet the increasing demand for fossil-free electricity and contribute to Europe's energy transition. Vattenfall is using low-emission steel for parts of the turbine towers, which the company states will reduce the wind farms' overall carbon footprint by approximately 16 percent.
