Veeam Uses AWS Storage Services for Offsite Backups

Amazon Web Services (AWS) and data protection firm Veeam have integrated their services to streamline the storage of offsite backups. The new integration allows businesses to move their on-premises backups to AWS cloud storage services, such as Amazon S3, for enhanced durability and cost-effectiveness.

The solution aims to reduce the reliance on and costs associated with maintaining extensive physical backup infrastructure. Veeam Backup & Replication, starting with version 9.5 Update 4, supports automatic tiering of backups to Amazon S3. This feature, known as 'capacity tier,' helps lower expenses by utilizing cloud storage for backup data.

Customers can leverage multiple AWS storage options for their Veeam backups. These include direct storage to Amazon S3, utilizing AWS Storage Gateway for network-attached storage capabilities, or employing AWS Snowball Edge devices for large-scale data transfers. The choice of service depends on specific business requirements and data volume.

Furthermore, the integration supports disaster recovery scenarios. Veeam enables users to recover on-premises workloads as Amazon EC2 instances in AWS. This capability ensures business continuity by providing a cloud-based recovery environment. The integration has been available since early 2019.
