Venice Airport Secures €80 Million Loan for Net-Zero Goals

Venice Marco Polo Airport is set to significantly advance its 2030 net-zero emissions roadmap following an €80 million financing agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB). The funding, channeled through Milione S.p.A., the parent company of airport operator SAVE S.p.A., will support a comprehensive program of sustainability and energy efficiency investments.

The planned investments include the electrification of airport operations, the installation of approximately 500 electric vehicle charging points, and the acquisition of over 20 zero-emission vehicles. Additional measures involve bolstering renewable electricity generation and enhancing digital systems and cybersecurity. These initiatives are designed to reduce emissions from ground operations and foster a more sustainable transport and logistics environment at the airport.

Beyond decarbonization, the project will upgrade the airport's operational resilience, improving its capacity to manage the impacts of increasingly frequent extreme weather events. Environmental enhancements include improved waste management systems and upgraded stormwater treatment facilities, crucial for minimizing impacts within Venice's sensitive lagoon ecosystem.

While the investment program will not increase passenger handling capacity, it is projected to create around 1,000 temporary jobs during its implementation phase across construction and installation activities. SAVE S.p.A. aims for Venice Airport to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030, with this EIB financing marking a substantial step towards that target.
