Venture capital trends show record funding concentrated in fewer, larger deals
Global venture funding hit $680 billion through Q3 2026, yet the number of deals for early-stage startups continues to decline.

Data from Crunchbase indicates a widening gap in the venture capital market for 2026. While global funding reached record levels of nearly $680 billion by the end of the third quarter, this capital is increasingly channeled into a small number of massive financing rounds rather than distributed across the broader startup ecosystem.
During the third quarter, approximately one-third of all global venture funding was captured by just 27 companies raising rounds of $1 billion or more. In North America, the largest market for such investment, deal counts fell by 16% year-over-year in Q3, even as the total dollar amount invested surged by 50%.
This trend is particularly evident in Series B financing. Despite reaching multi-year highs in total capital deployed, the volume of deals at this stage is trending toward a multi-year low. This pattern of capital concentration suggests that investors are focusing on maturing, high-profile entities while funding for seed and early-stage companies remains stagnant.
The industry is now looking toward the expected IPO of Anthropic as a bellwether for the sector. A successful market entry could justify ongoing large-scale AI bets, whereas a weaker performance may force a reevaluation of unicorn valuations.
