Verizon and Nokia partner for Thames Freeport private 5G network

London – Verizon Business and Nokia Oyj have announced a partnership to deploy private 5G networks across multiple industrial and logistics sites within the Thames Freeport. This initiative is set to provide the technological foundation for the economic revival and modernization of one of the United Kingdom's busiest maritime hubs.

The deployment will enable Thames Freeport to leverage advanced data, AI, edge computing, and IoT infrastructure to enhance port and manufacturing operations. This technological upgrade is designed to stimulate economic growth, create high-value jobs, and attract investment to the region, which has already generated 1,400 jobs with a target of 5,000 by 2030.

Nokia will serve as the sole hardware and software provider, supplying its Nokia Digital Automation Cloud (DAC) and Nokia MX Industrial Edge (MXIE) solutions. The private 5G networks will be implemented at key locations, including DP World London Gateway and DP World Logistics Park, Port of Tilbury, and Ford's Dagenham manufacturing site.

Verizon Business stated that the private 5G networks will facilitate AI-driven data analytics, predictive maintenance, process automation, and real-time logistics orchestration. The collaboration is part of a broader effort to revitalize the Thames Estuary region and establish it as a leading technological corridor in Europe.
