Veterinary Management Groups Forms Council to Update Financial Chart of Accounts Standard

Veterinary Management Groups (VMG) has announced the creation of the VMG-AAHA Chart of Accounts Council, a new standing body responsible for maintaining the VMG-AAHA Companion Animal Chart of Accounts. This financial classification standard is widely used for benchmarking veterinary practices across the industry.

The establishment of the Council signals a commitment to a consistent annual update cycle, a transparent process for proposed changes, and an open channel for participation from veterinarians, accountants, and practice managers. This aims to ensure the standard remains relevant and adaptable to the evolving needs of the veterinary sector.

The new process allows for year-round submissions of proposed changes, which will be reviewed twice annually. The council intends to implement meaningful, incremental improvements over time, rather than drastic annual overhauls. Approved changes will be communicated by July 31 each year, followed by a 60-day period for industry review and feedback.

Finalized changes will be confirmed by October 15 and will take effect on January 1 of the following year. The next set of updates will be finalized for implementation in January 2028. All submissions and their outcomes will be recorded in a publicly accessible log.

The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) supports this initiative, emphasizing the importance of financial clarity in improving animal healthcare. A standardized chart of accounts enables practices to better assess their performance and make informed business decisions.
