Vietnam proposes age limits for social media use among under-16s

Vietnam is preparing to implement restrictions on social media access for individuals under the age of 16. A draft decree mandates that social media platforms must not allow users under 16 to post content, comment, or engage in interactive features such as likes. The primary aim is to safeguard minors from online risks.

Under the proposed regulations, social media accounts for users younger than 16 would need to be registered using the personal information of their parents or legal guardians. These guardians would be responsible for supervising the content their children access and the duration of their online activity. Platforms will also be required to employ technical measures to identify young users and recommend age-appropriate content.

Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Phan Tam, stated that the initiative's goal is not to ban or excessively restrict youth social media use, but to ensure a safe and age-appropriate environment. The draft further requires platforms to enable the highest level of privacy protection for minors' accounts and to proactively identify and warn against harmful content, including violence, pornography, and drug-related material.

Vietnam's proposal reflects a growing global concern among governments regarding the online safety of minors and the potential negative impacts of social media on mental health. France recently approved a ban on social media for those under 15, following Australia's lead in implementing similar age restrictions. The country is also considering tighter rules for online gaming, limiting playtime for those under 16.

The draft decree is not yet final and may undergo revisions before official adoption, indicating ongoing discussions about the scope and implementation of these protective measures.
