Viettel unveils VGC v1.0 security chip for government applications

Viettel and the Vietnam Government Cipher Committee have unveiled the VGC v1.0 security chip and a domestic semiconductor platform in Hanoi. Built on the open-source RISC-V architecture, the hardware allows for sovereign control over processor design and modification, reducing reliance on third-party silicon.

The VGC v1.0 chip passed initial technical testing in the first quarter of 2026. It is currently deployed in secure USB storage devices used by government and defense agencies. Future development focuses on integrating the technology into the country's national digital signature certification system, which currently manages over two million active certificates.

A formal agreement between the stakeholders outlines plans for volume manufacturing, the development of multi-core secure platforms, and workforce training. This initiative aligns with Vietnam’s broader strategic roadmap to build a localized civil cryptography ecosystem and expand domestic semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.
