Viewpointsystem Integrates Full Eye Tracking into Smart Glasses Frame

Viewpointsystem has developed a technology enabling the entire image-based eye-tracking pipeline to run on an ultra-low-power microcontroller within smart glasses frames, reducing power consumption and heat.

14 October 2026

Viewpointsystem, a company based in Vienna, has introduced a new approach for smart glasses that integrates a complete image-based eye-tracking pipeline directly into the glasses frame using an ultra-low-power microcontroller. This development addresses previous challenges related to power consumption, heat generation, and space limitations that hindered the integration of advanced eye tracking into lightweight smart eyewear.

The new Digital Iris® Module utilizes Alif Semiconductor's Ensemble microcontroller, enabling it to perform the entire 140 Hz eye-tracking process without requiring a high-end application processor. This "edge processing" architecture significantly reduces power draw and heat, potentially extending battery life up to 15 times and allowing for slimmer, lighter smart glasses.

This technology simplifies integration for smart glasses original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). The ready-to-integrate module reduces development efforts and remains compatible with existing application processors. The microcontroller's integrated neural processing unit (NPU) also allows for additional AI-based functions to run simultaneously, while keeping sensitive eye-camera images securely on the device.

Nils Berger, CEO and Founder of Viewpointsystem, stated that eye tracking is essential for thin and light smart glasses designs. By processing the entire pipeline at the edge, the company offers manufacturers flexibility for broader design integration. This patented solution opens new avenues for smart glasses where constraints in power, space, and processing have previously limited the use of eye-tracking technology.
