Vijay Pande Launches New AI-Focused Venture Firm
Former a16z partner Vijay Pande has launched VZVC, a new, smaller firm focused on AI. He believes open datasets are key to transforming medicine.

Vijay Pande, who left Andreessen Horowitz's (a16z) roughly $4 billion biotech practice last year, has launched VZVC, a significantly smaller firm with an AI-native focus. The new venture capital firm aims to invest in areas where artificial intelligence is poised to reshape biological discovery and engineering.
Pande discusses the fundamental shift in biology from a "discovery" science to an "engineering" one, enabled by advancements in AI. He argues that the true transformation of medicine will come from open, shared datasets rather than proprietary, walled-off information.
He also addressed the persistent challenge of high clinical trial costs, suggesting that a more focused investment approach is necessary. Pande's new strategy involves fewer, more deliberate bets compared to his previous role managing a larger fund.
"We're not doing 30 bets a year," Pande stated, indicating a shift towards more selective investments with VZVC.
