Viking Line Ships Use Liquefied Biogas on Baltic Sea Routes

Shipping company Viking Line has begun utilizing liquefied biogas (LBG) on its Baltic Sea routes through Gasum's Green Shipping on Demand service. This initiative addresses the growing demand for more climate-efficient transportation and allows customers to meet their emission reduction targets.
Harri Tamminen, Vice President and Director of Freight at Viking Line, emphasized the Baltic Sea's significance between Finland and Sweden and the company's commitment to its protection. The shipping line previously pioneered the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) on passenger ships, and the adoption of LBG marks the next step towards more sustainable maritime transport.
Under the Green Shipping on Demand service, Gasum supplies LBG in proportion to the fuel required for a passenger or transport customer's journey. The more passengers who choose a "green ticket," the more LBG is utilized. LBG is a fully renewable fuel capable of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to fossil fuels.
Tamminen noted that Viking Line's vessels are already equipped to use future renewable methane fuels, such as e-methane, without additional engine investments. He advises other shipping companies to seek proficient partners in the energy transition to ensure future competitiveness and collaboratively reduce climate impact.
