Virginia ranks in top five for innovation and research ecosystem

Virginia has secured the number five spot for 'Innovation and Research Ecosystem' in the 2026 'Top States for Doing Business' report by Area Development. The ranking, which evaluates states based on expert industry consulting data, highlights the Commonwealth's progress in fostering corporate and academic development.

Data from the past five years indicates significant expansion in the state’s innovation sector. Annual university research expenditures reached $2.6 billion, a 40% increase, while more than 25,000 new high-growth startups have been launched. Additionally, venture capital investment into Virginia-based technology companies reached a record $2.9 billion in 2025, nearly doubling since 2020.

The Virginia Innovation Partnership Corporation (VIPC) continues to implement strategies to maintain this momentum, specifically through its 'Lab-to-Launch' program. This initiative aims to streamline the commercialization of university-based intellectual property, providing a faster path to market for research spinouts.
