Oracle has issued VirtualBox 7.2.14, a maintenance release for its open-source virtualization software. The update brings improvements to clipboard handling and expands compatibility with newer Linux kernels.
For Windows 10 and Windows 11 users, VirtualBox 7.2.14 now correctly handles Unicode clipboard formats. The installer has also been updated to detect the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime environment through the Windows Service Framework. A significant addition is the preliminary support for Linux kernel 7.2, which broadens the software's utility on Linux systems.
The release addresses stability concerns, including a fix for an issue where Windows 11 virtual machines could experience a crash after a Secure Boot DBX update via UEFI. Furthermore, the logic for accessing processor registers has been optimized when using Windows Hyper-V as the virtualization engine. This prevents the software from querying or modifying the XCR0 register on processors lacking XSAVE support, thereby improving operational stability.
In terms of build processes, Oracle has simplified the compilation requirements for traditional BIOS components. The entire build process can now consistently utilize NASM assembler version 2.16 or newer, reducing the complexity of the build environment. The release aims to provide a more stable and broadly compatible virtualization experience.
