Visit Norway leverages political controversy to promote scenic infrastructure
Visit Norway has rebranded its public toilet website in response to negative comments from Donald Trump, resulting in a significant surge in international web traffic.

Following disparaging comments made by former U.S. President Donald Trump in October, the Norwegian tourism board, Visit Norway, has updated its promotional web page focused on public restrooms. By reframing the critique, the agency has successfully driven widespread attention to the country’s high-design architectural rest stops.
Since the update, the page has logged 200,000 views, with related social media content reaching five million organic impressions. The agency reports that many American users have responded positively, citing interest in visiting the sites featured in the campaign.
Anne-Signe Fagereng, head of consumer marketing at Visit Norway, stated that the campaign is not a political maneuver but a strategic effort to showcase the value of the country’s scenic route infrastructure. The facilities, commissioned by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, are designed by leading architectural firms to blend into the landscape and serve as points of interest.
While often viewed as utilitarian, these stops are presented as a blend of public service and design. The initiative highlights how Norway has chosen to prioritize the traveler experience through intentional architecture, turning necessary road stops into notable destinations.
