Volkswagen Adopts Amazon DataZone to Improve Data Accessibility

Volkswagen AG has implemented Amazon DataZone, a cloud-based data management service, aiming to dismantle data silos and improve data sharing across its global production network.

The automotive manufacturer, which previously partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to develop the Digital Production Platform (DPP), faced challenges in sharing data between disparate applications and production facilities. Data was housed in isolated Amazon Redshift data warehouses within separate AWS accounts, complicating consolidation and discovery without a centralized approach.

Amazon DataZone addresses these issues by enabling data discovery, subscription, and access governance. The service facilitates data productization and distribution in a centrally managed manner, aligning with data mesh principles. This allows for more effective sharing of internal data across various business units and applications within the organization.

Volkswagen intends to leverage DataZone to enhance data discoverability and streamline the process of accessing necessary information. This initiative supports the company's broader objectives of optimizing production and logistics and fostering data-driven decision-making globally.

The new approach enables a more systematic workflow for requesting and approving data access, reducing manual interventions and improving overall data governance.
