Volkswagen Confirms Second Generation ID. Buzz Development
Volkswagen's CEO for passenger cars confirmed the retro-styled electric MPV ID. Buzz will receive a successor. The new model will utilize the SSP platform and is expected to be more affordable.
Volkswagen's CEO for passenger cars, Thomas Schäfer, has confirmed that the company is developing a second generation of its retro-styled electric MPV, the ID. Buzz. The new model will be built on Volkswagen's latest scalable platform, the SSP (Scalable Systems Platform).
Speaking to Auto Express at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, Schäfer indicated that development work is progressing. The current ID. Buzz, which has been on the market for four years, will receive updates before the new generation arrives. The successor is expected to offer enhanced range, faster charging speeds, and improved software experiences, enabled by the new SSP architecture.
Schäfer acknowledged that the current ID. Buzz has faced challenges with its cost structure, which has hindered its sales performance. To address this, the adoption of the SSP platform is intended to help reduce manufacturing costs. Volkswagen is also considering the use of more cost-effective lithium iron phosphate batteries to further lower the vehicle's price point.
While Volkswagen aims to leverage its classic design elements, the company stated it does not intend to revive all its past model names. The ID. Buzz, however, represents a successful application of retro-inspired design, offering a unique proposition in the market compared to brands without a comparable historical legacy.
