Volkswagen recalls electric cars due to fire risk
Volkswagen is recalling electric car models ID.3, ID.4, ID.7, and ID. Buzz due to manufacturing defects in the high-voltage battery that could pose a fire risk.
Volkswagen has initiated a recall for its electric car models ID.3, ID.4, ID.7, and ID. Buzz in Germany due to a potential fire hazard. The issue stems from manufacturing defects in high-voltage battery cells, potentially caused by production errors at suppliers. Quality checks have revealed that defective cells can, in rare instances, lead to increased thermal stress and, in extreme cases, ignition.
The recall affects certain vehicles produced between 2023 and 2025, with estimates suggesting several thousand cars could be impacted in Germany. Similar recalls have already commenced in the UK and the US, where over 22,000 ID.4 models have been reported as affected in the latter country. Volkswagen is coordinating closely with relevant authorities to activate the recall in other markets.
As an immediate safety measure, Volkswagen is limiting the charging capacity of the affected vehicles to a maximum of 80 percent. Some vehicles will be brought into service centers for inspection of their high-voltage batteries. The charging restriction will only be lifted once a battery is confirmed to be fault-free. Affected customers will receive a letter detailing the recall process and contact information.
