Volkswagen Touareg Starts and Drives After Missile Strike Damage
A third-generation Volkswagen Touareg in Ukraine was able to start and drive away from the scene despite significant damage from a nearby missile strike. The vehicle sustained effects from the blast, including structural compromise.

A third-generation Volkswagen Touareg, located in Ukraine, has demonstrated remarkable resilience after sustaining significant damage from a nearby ballistic missile strike. The SUV was parked in close proximity to the blast radius when the projectile detonated. The resulting shockwave and shrapnel severely impacted the vehicle, causing the roof to collapse inwards and the A-pillars to bend. Most of the body panels were deformed, and all side windows were shattered.
Despite the extensive external damage, including a caved-in roof and broken glass, the vehicle's 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine successfully started when the driver attempted ignition. Once placed in drive, the Touareg was able to move away from the site under its own power.
Inside the cabin, the digital instrument cluster and the central infotainment touchscreen appeared to be functional after the explosion. The climate control system and electric seats were also operable. However, features like the head-up display (HUD) were rendered unusable due to the shattered glass. Upon starting the engine, a significant number of warning lights illuminated on the dashboard.
The incident comes amid criticism of modern vehicles for their perceived over-reliance on electronics, suggesting they may enter protective modes or become inoperable after malfunctions. This particular Touareg, however, managed to retain core operational capability despite extreme trauma, allowing for evacuation from the area.
