Volkswagen's 'Largest Ever' Restructuring to Cost €16 Billion

Volkswagen is embarking on its largest-ever corporate restructuring, a process expected to incur costs of around €16 billion. These expenses are largely attributed to workforce adjustments and the potential closure of several manufacturing sites.
The German automotive giant, Europe's largest carmaker, faces intense pressure from increasing competition, particularly from Chinese manufacturers, alongside challenges such as tariffs and overcapacity. The company has characterized its current market position as a fight for survival.
As part of the overhaul, Volkswagen aims to find new purposes for four German plants that are expected to cease vehicle production within the next decade. Furthermore, the company plans to cut an additional 50,000 jobs beyond previously announced reductions.
Sources indicate that phasing out production at the Emden and Zwickau plants is estimated to cost about €1 billion each. The Neckarsulm and Hanover facilities are projected to incur costs of approximately €2 billion apiece. An additional €10 billion is earmarked to cover expenses related to a global reduction of up to 60,000 positions.
