Volo Sports Acquires Rivals to Expand National Recreational League Network

Baltimore-based Volo Sports, which has grown from a 16-person bocce club into a national provider of sports leagues, is expanding by acquiring two rival companies. The company has purchased Fray and Clubwanka Miami, increasing its presence to 17 cities across the U.S.

The company's expansion follows its recent securing of $21 million in private equity. The acquisitions strengthen Volo Sports' footprint in markets such as Washington D.C., where Fray has a significant presence, as well as Phoenix and Jacksonville. Clubwanka Miami adds specific offerings in kickball and volleyball leagues.

Adult recreational sports leagues have experienced a surge in popularity, with participation nearly doubling in recent years. Volo Sports has capitalized on this trend, growing to over 500,000 annual members since its founding in 2010. The company plans to integrate the acquired entities while maintaining their established community focus.

Giovanni Marcantoni, founder and CEO of Volo Sports, stated that the acquisitions support the company's national growth strategy. He highlighted Fray and Clubwanka Miami as strong operators with proven, community-built growth. Volo Sports aims to build upon existing structures and extend a similar sense of belonging to more people in more cities.

The recent expansions include Volo Sports establishing a presence in Jacksonville and Phoenix. These moves follow several years of growth during which the company has solidified its position as one of the largest providers of social and recreational sports services in the United States.
