Volvo EX50: New Electric SUV to Launch in US at Lower Price Point

Volvo is reportedly preparing to launch a new all-electric compact SUV, the EX50, in the United States. The new model is expected to surpass the current EX40 in terms of body length and height while simultaneously featuring a lower price point, potentially making it Volvo's most affordable electric offering in the US.

The EX50 is slated for a US market entry in the fall of 2027, with an anticipated starting price near $50,000. This positions it significantly below the current EX40's starting price of approximately $55,000. This pricing strategy suggests Volvo aims to broaden the appeal of its electric SUV lineup.

The new EX50 will enter the competitive compact electric SUV segment, facing rivals such as the Tesla Model Y, Hyundai IONIQ 5, and Ford Mustang Mach-E. A key anticipated change is the adoption of Volvo's SPA3 platform, which underpins the recently revealed EX60. This platform is expected to bring an 800-volt electrical system and a software-defined architecture, potentially enhancing DC fast-charging speeds and overall energy efficiency.

The EX60, which made its debut this year, offers insights into the technology expected for the EX50. The SPA3 platform enables the EX60 to achieve a WLTP range of up to approximately 644 km and supports advanced driver-assistance features. While the EX50 will be smaller and more affordably priced than the EX60, it is expected to inherit similar technological advancements. Volvo previously withdrew the EX30 from the US market earlier this year, and the EX50 may help fill a portion of the market positioning left vacant by that decision.
