Automaker Volvo plans to implement a hands-free, point-to-point driving system by 2030, powered by Nvidia's artificial intelligence technology. The company announced Thursday an agreement with Nvidia, which will supply the automaker with its autonomous driving software stack.

The new system, referred to by Volvo as "point-to-point," is designed to handle complex urban environments without driver intervention. This includes managing traffic lights, stop signs, and unprotected left turns. Volvo is classifying the system as Level 2++, indicating an advanced driver-assist function that still requires driver supervision.

Volvo enters a competitive landscape where Tesla has already introduced similar technologies with its "Full Self-Driving" system. Mercedes-Benz has also recently rolled out a partially automated driving system based on Nvidia's technology. Volvo aims to differentiate itself by offering an increasingly safe and comfortable driving experience.

Upon completion, Volvo's system intends to offer a driving experience where the vehicle navigates autonomously along predetermined routes, reducing the need for constant driver input. The company has not yet released specific details regarding the deployment timeline or further features before its 2030 target.
