Volvo's Updated XC60 and XC90 Plug-in Hybrids Offer Extended Electric Range

Volvo has revealed updates for its plug-in hybrid (PHEV) XC60 and XC90 SUVs, which now offer substantially extended electric-only driving ranges. The new models are positioned as Volvo's first "long range plug-in hybrids," with preliminary EPA testing indicating an electric range of 78 miles for the XC60 and 73 miles for the XC90.

This represents more than double the electric range of previous PHEV variants. While these figures are still preliminary and based on EPA testing standards, they would mark a significant improvement over the current market average, where most PHEVs typically offer between 30-50 miles of electric range.

Automakers are increasingly focusing on electrification, with PHEVs serving as a transitional technology for many consumers moving towards fully electric vehicles. Volvo's emphasis on extended electric range aims to address consumer concerns about range anxiety and charging infrastructure for daily use.

The updated models are designed for consumers seeking the flexibility of electric driving for shorter trips and the convenience of a gasoline engine for longer journeys. If confirmed, these new range figures would place Volvo competitively within the PHEV segment.
