VRChat Faces User Backlash Over Decision Not to Label AI-Generated Content

VRChat is seeing a decline in user ratings on Steam after announcing it will not implement mandatory labels for AI-generated content, despite overwhelming support for the move from its community.

3 November 2026

VRChat has declined to introduce labels for AI-generated content, a decision that has triggered a significant drop in user sentiment on the Steam platform. Recent data indicates that nearly 95% of the 21,000 users polled by the company favored the implementation of such identifiers to filter content.

Management stated that they would not proceed with the labeling system, arguing it could prove counterproductive. The company expressed concerns that labels might be ignored by some creators and could inadvertently trigger harassment campaigns against artists suspected of using AI tools, potentially fostering an toxic environment within the community.

Instead, VRChat plans to prohibit AI-generated thumbnails for virtual worlds and introduce a rating system to allow user feedback. These measures have failed to appease a segment of the user base that values human-made content and fears that widespread AI usage devalues the effort required for original creative work.

The resulting backlash has negatively impacted the platform's standing, with recent reviews on Steam dropping to 'mostly negative' from previous higher ratings. For many in the VRChat community, the authenticity of creative output is a core component of the platform's social identity.
