VW and Bosch End Autonomous Driving Alliance
Volkswagen Group and Bosch have officially ended their joint venture, the Alliance for Automated Driving (ADA), but have successfully developed a common software platform for future use.
Wolfsburg/Gerlingen – Volkswagen Group and Bosch have confirmed the termination of their collaborative efforts within the Alliance for Automated Driving (ADA). This decision, following earlier reports, was formalized in a joint press release.
The alliance's primary achievement is a shared software stack powered by artificial intelligence, designed to support both advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and automated driving functions. This technology enables "handsfree" driving, classified as approximately Level 2++ automation, allowing drivers to remove their hands from the steering wheel while maintaining focus on the road. Volkswagen plans to integrate this system across its vehicle classes, from compact cars to premium models, and across both electric and internal combustion engine platforms. The first production vehicles are expected to feature the system in 2027.
Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume highlighted the increasing importance of advanced driver assistance systems for customers, enhancing safety, comfort, and ease of driving. He reaffirmed the Volkswagen Group's commitment to deploying highly automated driving capabilities in Europe and North America. Blume stated that Cariad and Bosch have established a strong technological foundation through the ADA alliance, which will now be leveraged with a focus on speed, scalability, and rapid implementation for the group's brands.
Christoph Hartung, CTO Systems, Software and Services at Bosch Mobility, expressed continued optimism. He noted the strategic advantage of pooling resources in future-oriented fields like automated driving, stating that Bosch has already secured global orders from renowned vehicle manufacturers for their software stack, with projects on track for scheduled series launches.
A spokesperson from Cariad explained that the termination resulted from regular reviews of development partnerships and their alignment with strategic goals and market trends. Specifically, the development of Level 3 driving systems in Europe has not progressed as anticipated at the alliance's inception, suggesting potential concerns about Bosch's pace in reaching this milestone. Volkswagen is reportedly exploring new partnerships, potentially with Mobileye, with whom they are already collaborating on autonomous robotaxi services.
