Wall Street Continues Push in Leveraged Products

Wall Street has continued to expand its offering of leveraged financial products. Since the S&P 500 index reached its low in October 2022, assets in Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) have surged by over 250 percent. Concurrently, assets in ETFs that utilize derivatives have seen an even greater increase, rising by more than 450 percent, according to data cited by Todd Sohn, chief ETF strategist at Baird Strategas.

During this period, ETF issuers have launched 3,363 new products, with over 30 percent of this year's launches incorporating leverage. This trend suggests a sustained market appetite for more complex and potentially higher-risk investment vehicles. While equity ETFs have attracted $3.2 trillion in assets since October 2022, equity mutual funds have experienced net outflows totaling $3.3 trillion. Money market fund assets have also grown substantially, up 74 percent.

The reach of these sophisticated products is extending into private markets. Recently, 21Shares listed CLAU on the Vienna Stock Exchange, a product offering exposure to the implied pre-IPO valuation of AI company Anthropic. This development signifies a growing trend towards the use of complex financial instruments across various market segments.
