Wallenberg AI support to accelerate quantum breakthroughs at Chalmers

Chalmers University of Technology is among the eleven research groups selected for support in the first round of the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation's new AI Consultancy Grant program. This initiative provides researchers with access to specialized AI expertise to accelerate scientific breakthroughs.

Two projects at Chalmers, both based at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience, have been awarded up to 700 hours of AI support. One project, led by Senior Researcher Giovanna Tancredi, focuses on quantum gate optimization using digital twins of superconducting qubits. The goal is to develop a virtual model that predicts, analyzes, and optimizes quantum processor performance to address errors and improve scalability.

"This project aims to develop a new approach for improving quantum processors by combining artificial intelligence with physics-based modeling," said Giovanna Tancredi.

The second Chalmers project, "AI-assisted calibration of superconducting quantum processors," led by Professor Göran Johansson, will utilize AI solutions to enhance the calibration of the university's 25-qubit quantum computer, facilitating the scaling towards 100 qubits.

The grant scheme, launched in response to rapid advances in AI, connects research teams with AI consultants from AI4S, a company that combines advanced AI competence with research experience. This collaboration aims to foster new working methods and accelerate innovation across various scientific fields.
