Walmart Accelerates Electric Vehicle Charging Network Expansion

Walmart is significantly expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging network across the United States. The retail giant has already deployed 838 charging ports at 100 stores and has an additional 100 sites under active construction. Last month, its network growth outpaced all other EV charging networks except Tesla's.

The company's ambitious plan aims to establish a charging network extending to thousands of locations by 2030. This expansion holds significant potential, as approximately 90% of Americans live within a 10-minute drive of a Walmart store. Coupled with their proximity to major highways, this positions Walmart to address critical gaps in the nation's EV charging infrastructure.

"We absolutely have the opportunity to serve places that may not otherwise have that infrastructure," stated Shayne Wahlmeier, senior vice president of Walmart Energy. The initiative was driven by customer demand, with many actively requesting EV charging facilities, prompting Walmart to develop its own branded solution.

Walmart's new fast chargers are rated at 400 kilowatts and feature dual cords to accommodate various EV models. Charging can be initiated through Walmart's app, and the company is also testing credit card payment options. A key benefit for the retailer is the potential for increased in-store shopping, as the average 30-minute charging session provides ample time for customers to visit the store.

While other retailers like Target and Costco are also deploying EV chargers, Walmart's extensive footprint of over 4,600 U.S. stores provides a substantial advantage. Despite the U.S. currently having over 250,000 charging ports, millions more are needed to support the growing EV market.
