Walmart CEO: Prices won't change based on shopping history

Walmart has stated it will not adjust product prices based on customer shopping history or the time of day, according to CEO John Furner. In a letter to customers, Furner clarified that the company's move to digital shelf labels is primarily aimed at saving store associates time, rather than enabling dynamic price changes.

"Your income, shopping history, urgency, or what we think you could pay won't change the price," Furner wrote. He further emphasized that neither purchasing groceries nor electronics on a busy afternoon or during a sudden rush for an item will result in a higher price for the customer.

The company also confirmed it will not use conversations with its virtual assistant, Sparky, to implement dynamic pricing. This assurance addresses concerns that digital price tags could lead to personalized price discrimination.

Furner's statement follows reporting by The Wall Street Journal on Walmart's digital pricing initiatives. The company maintains its focus is on operational efficiency and consistent pricing for all customers.
