Walmart closes three Canadian locations as part of operational shift

Walmart has closed three locations in Canada—Côte-des-Neiges, Pointe-aux-Trembles, and Dorval—earlier this year. The move impacted over 330 employees, all of whom the company stated were offered positions at other nearby locations.

The retailer described the closures as part of a strategic review intended to better align its operations with changing consumer habits. The firm is transitioning away from older leased spaces toward larger, company-owned formats. These larger footprints are designed to better support grocery sales, curbside pickup, and e-commerce fulfillment operations.

With a global presence exceeding 10,900 stores, the three closures represent a minor adjustment to the company’s massive portfolio. Industry analysts noted that the closures reflect a standard industry practice of trimming underperforming assets rather than a retreat from the market.

This consolidation comes alongside ongoing investment in the Canadian market. Walmart Canada has announced plans to spend $150 million in Quebec this fiscal year, focusing on the renovation of 18 existing stores and the construction of a new location in Sherbrooke.
