Walmart Denies Personalized Pricing, Creating Opening for Small Businesses

Walmart President and CEO John Furner has assured customers that the retail giant does not engage in surveillance pricing, a practice where individual customers are charged different prices based on their personal data. In a letter posted online, Furner stated, "We price the product, not the person," addressing concerns raised by shoppers.

The issue gained attention after Walmart announced in June 2024 the implementation of digital shelf labels. While the company presented this as a way to streamline price changes, some customers feared it would enable dynamic pricing based on their private information.

Some experts believe Walmart's commitment to transparent pricing could benefit smaller competitors. Lindsay Owens, president and CEO of Groundwork Collaborative, suggests that small businesses can leverage this by advertising their prices as "transparent, predictable, and fair." Owens noted, "There's a competitive advantage to be had in a market where pricing feels unfair."

While Walmart publicly distances itself from personalized pricing, the broader regulatory landscape is evolving. Several U.S. states, including Connecticut, Maryland, and New Jersey, have enacted legislation this year to restrict surveillance pricing, particularly within the grocery sector.
