Walmart Uses Light-Up Digital Shelf Labels to Aid Product Location
Walmart is rolling out illuminated digital shelf labels connected to its app to help both customers and employees locate products more efficiently. This technology is part of the retailer's broader efforts to modernize its operations.

Walmart is implementing a new system of light-up digital shelf labels designed to improve product location for both shoppers and store associates. The feature, called Shop to Light, allows customers using the Walmart app to navigate to the correct aisle for a specific item, after which the digital shelf label will illuminate.
Complementing this, Pick to Light and Stock to Light features utilize similar technology to assist staff in fulfilling online orders and restocking shelves. These tools are aimed at increasing operational efficiency within stores. Walmart plans to deploy these capabilities across its entire store network before the upcoming holiday season.
The introduction of these digital labels is part of a wider initiative by Walmart to modernize its retail technology and streamline internal processes. The company is integrating artificial intelligence to enhance employee roles, enabling them to dedicate more time to customer interactions rather than routine tasks.
With a vast inventory across thousands of stores, improving the ease of finding products is a key focus for Walmart. While specific financial details of the rollout have not been disclosed, pilot programs have indicated significant time savings for both customers and staff. The Shop to Light feature alone has registered five million activations during its testing phase.
