Warning Issued Over Mailbox Scam Targeting Consumers
Consumer advocates are alerting the public to a recurring scam involving postcards that urge recipients to call back. Responding to these cards can lead to costly subscription traps or other financial pitfalls.
The Consumer Centre Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is warning the public about a known scam that utilizes deceptive postcards. These mailings, often in a distinctive orange color, bear messages such as "Important notification. We could not reach you." They typically include a phone number with instructions to call back within seven days.
However, consumer advocates strongly advise against making the call. This is a long-standing fraudulent scheme designed to lure individuals into expensive subscription services or other cost traps. Wiebke Cornelius, head of the consumer center, noted that the urgent wording and eye-catching color are intended to create pressure and unease.
Despite any perceived urgency, recipients should remain calm and refrain from calling the provided number. Such calls can result in unknowingly signing up for costly contracts or incurring unexpected charges. It is recommended to disregard the postcard entirely.
Authorities urge consumers to be cautious of suspicious mail and to avoid engaging with unknown numbers or unclear demands. This type of scam continues to evolve, with similar tactics sometimes appearing in digital forms.
