Warp Allows AI Use in Hiring Process

Technology company Warp has adopted a different approach to recruitment, permitting candidates to use artificial intelligence tools throughout the hiring process. The company believes this method more accurately identifies high-caliber individuals and reflects their actual performance on the job.

Warp asks engineering candidates to build a real feature from their product within an hour, granting them access to the same tools they would use at work, including AI. CEO Jake Saper notes that using AI not only reveals speed but also helps distinguish exceptional candidates from capable ones.

According to Saper, top candidates first focus on understanding the problem, ask clarifying questions, and build a mental model before leveraging AI. Conversely, less effective candidates may rely too heavily on AI-generated output without fully grasping the underlying issue.

The company posits that in the AI era, the critical skill is not execution but judgment. AI accelerates task completion but does not replace decision-making, balancing trade-offs, or evaluating solutions.

Warp is currently doubling its workforce. The firm is seeking employees who learn quickly, thrive in ambiguity, and know how to direct AI, combined with deep domain expertise.
