Warren Buffett Stepped Down at 96. What Happens to Identity After Career?

Warren Buffett, 96, stepped down as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway on September 18, concluding a tenure of over six decades. He will now serve as chairman emeritus, with his son Howard Buffett assuming the chairmanship and Greg Abel continuing as CEO.

The act of stepping down from a long-held, defining career role can present significant personal challenges. While such transitions make headlines, the subsequent period of identity adjustment is often less discussed.

Research from Boston Consulting Group, surveying former CEOs of large companies, found that while about 90 percent were satisfied with their retirement decision after a year, only 40 percent felt satisfied in the first year. Many described feelings of disconnection, unease, and self-doubt, indicating that their professional role had been integral to their personal identity.

Studies suggest that individuals in high-achieving, performance-driven careers often equate their work with their sense of self. When this role changes, the external validation and daily markers of significance disappear. For many, rebuilding a sense of identity and purpose after leaving such a career can be a lengthy process.
