Wärtsilä study identifies potential for 200 billion euro savings in data center power

A report from Wärtsilä suggests that shifting to flexible off-grid engine power could significantly reduce costs as global data center capacity triples by 2035.

2 November 2026

A new study by Wärtsilä highlights the economic potential of choosing flexible power technologies for data centers, projecting savings of approximately 196 billion euros compared to traditional combined-cycle gas turbines. The analysis focuses on a capacity of 55 GW, as global demand for data infrastructure continues to scale.

The findings suggest that decentralized, engine-based power solutions offer greater flexibility than legacy grid-dependent models. By adopting these systems, data center operators can optimize operational costs while reducing their footprint in terms of land and water consumption, addressing two significant regulatory and environmental challenges facing the industry.

As the industry prepares for a projected tripling of capacity by 2035, the report concludes that strategic technology investment is essential. By integrating flexible power, data centers can transition from being static power consumers to active participants in stabilizing the energy landscape.
