Technology group Wärtsilä has secured an order to supply its Wärtsilä 25 Ammonia auxiliary engine, along with a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) unit and a gas valve unit (GVU), for two new 51,350 m³ capacity midsize LPG/liquid ammonia carrier vessels.

The engine technology is designed to support reduced emissions and enhance operational efficiency. This deployment aligns with the vessels' objective to meet evolving environmental regulations and sustainability requirements within the maritime industry.

The vessels are currently under construction at the Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering (SOE) shipyard located in Shanghai. The ownership of these two carriers will be managed by a joint venture, the specifics of which were not disclosed in the announcement.

This order reflects a growing trend in the shipping sector towards adopting alternative fuels like ammonia to decarbonize operations. Wärtsilä's involvement underscores the company's strategy to provide solutions for cleaner maritime transport.
