Wärtsilä to supply engines for 12 new CMA CGM container vessels
Wärtsilä will supply 36 dual fuel engines for CMA CGM's 12 new 18,000 TEU container vessels. The ships will operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG) to support lower-emission operations.

Technology group Wärtsilä announced it will supply a total of 36 Wärtsilä 34DF dual fuel engines for 12 new 18,000 TEU container vessels. The vessels are being built for French operator CMA CGM at the Jiangnan Shipyard in China. The ships are designed to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG), aligning with CMA CGM's strategy to reduce emissions from its deep-sea container operations.
The engines will be delivered through Wärtsilä’s joint venture company CWEC (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. The order for all 12 vessels' engines was booked by Wärtsilä in the first quarter of 2026. The financial value of the contract was not disclosed.
The selection highlights the capability of the Wärtsilä 34DF engines to operate on multiple fuel types, including LNG. This technology enables shipping companies to meet evolving environmental regulations and reduce the carbon footprint of maritime transport, particularly concerning sulfur and nitrogen oxide emissions.
CMA CGM, a major global shipping company, continues its fleet modernization with an emphasis on environmental performance. This investment in new vessels equipped with advanced engine technology underscores a commitment to sustainable shipping practices and operational efficiency.
