Washington Initiative Challenges New Income Tax
A group called 'Vote Yes Repeal the Income Tax' has released a video ad criticizing Washington's new income tax and its impact on public worker pensions and Social Security benefits.

A campaign is underway in Washington State to repeal a newly enacted income tax. The group "Vote Yes Repeal the Income Tax" has launched a video featuring Ken Jennings, known for the game show "Jeopardy!", who previously endorsed the tax. The campaign argues that the tax jeopardizes pension protections for public workers, including teachers, firefighters, and police officers, which have been in place for 79 years.
The new tax also reportedly fails to shield Social Security benefits, leaving retirees' checks vulnerable. Reports indicate that approximately $4 billion has been withdrawn from the Law Enforcement Officers' and Firefighters' Retirement System Plan 1 (LEOFF 1) pension fund to address budget shortfalls. Critics question these actions, stating that the affected individuals are not wealthy and that the tax is intended for broad application.
The "Yes on I-645" initiative aims to repeal the income tax, restore the erased protections, and return fiscal control to voters. The campaign highlights concerns about the tax's fairness and its potential to affect the financial security of Washington residents, particularly retirees.
