Watching Sports on YouTube Doesn't Increase Physical Activity, Study Finds

SEOUL, South Korea โ€“ September 15, 2026 โ€“ A recent study by SEOULTECH suggests that college students' engagement with sports content on YouTube does not translate into increased real-world physical activity. The research challenges the notion that online consumption automatically promotes physical participation.

The study analyzed the behavior and sports consumption habits of university students, with a specific focus on their use of YouTube. Findings indicate that while YouTube offers a wide array of sports content beyond traditional broadcasts, this does not convert viewers into more active participants.

"Our findings show that online sports consumption and physical engagement are distinct activities," said Dr. Kim Min-jun, lead researcher on the study. "Simply watching sports videos does not necessarily motivate individuals to become more active."

The research highlights the need for a better understanding of digital media's impact on physical health and raises questions about how sports platforms and digital content can be leveraged more effectively for health promotion.
